~A challenge for all levels of skill and interest~

Here's an exercise to get you thinking about some fundamentals of design! For each topic listed, either post work from an artist (or artists) that strongly exhibits that quality— be sure to credit the creator— or make your own. c:

*Disclaimer:* some of these will overlap with others, and it's by no means an exhaustive list— just some ideas to get you started!

***

  1. Line(s) (line weight or thickness, types of line— continuous, broken, implied; straight vs. curves. Lines have direction, width, and length.)
  2. Shape(s) (areas defined by edges; organic vs. geometric)
  3. Color(s) (hue, saturation— or lack of, color schemes: complementary, analogous, warm/cool, limited palette or monochromatic)
  4. Value (dark vs. light. – it can help to look at greyscale images for this one)
  5. Negative space (the space around the subject of an image— can sometimes be as compelling as the subject itself)
  6. Texture (smooth vs. rough, fine/coarse, sharp/dull; 3D, tangible texture and techniques like impasto; markmaking)
  7. Pattern(s) (repeated texture, shapes, motifs, or other elements)
  8. Perspective (far vs near; creating illusions of depth)
  9. Scale (using relative sizes of elements to create interest or tension— or drama, if scale is exaggerated, i.e. something small is depicted as huge)
  10. Balance (a state of equilibrium; doesn't always have to be calm. symmetry vs. asymmetry)
  11. Rhythm (recurring elements or themes, or interruptions of them; proximity, similarity, continuation)
  12. Dominance/emphasis (contrasting size, position, color, or shape of elements to draw attention)
  13. Movement (how your eye is drawn through the piece, or: gives a sense of motion)
  14. Hierarchy (the viewer is led through the elements of the piece in order of significance; strong focal point)
  15. Minimalism (expressing an idea or form with as few elements, i.e. lines or shapes, as possible)
  16. Atmosphere (the piece has an overall "feel" or "vibe" to it; an environment or theme that evokes an emotional response in the viewer)
  17. Style (is the art created to look realistic, or is it simplified or exaggerated? or— imitate the style of a certain era or movement, i.e. Romantic, Impressionist, Modern, etc., or a specific artist)
  18. Juxtaposition (opposites! big and small, simple and complex... basically any of these elements along with counterexamples)
  19. Unity or concept (the piece has a strong, driving message or story that influences all aspects of it)

  20. FREE DAY! Go back and revisit your favorite principle, make a piece based on something you learned from this challenge, find or create something while focusing on multiple principles, etc.— you get to choose, you've earned it if you made it this far :)
